Student microscopes

With a single eyepiece and a straightforward focusing mechanism, they let beginners view prepared slides of cells, fibres and small organisms without a steep learning curve. For primary and lower-secondary STEM programmes, a class set of durable student microscopes is usually the most cost-effective choice.

Compound microscopes

Compound microscopes are the workhorses of serious biology teaching. They use two lens systems — an objective and an eyepiece — to deliver high magnification, typically from 40x up to 1000x or beyond. This makes them ideal for viewing cells, bacteria, blood smears and other specimens that demand fine detail. Binocular and trinocular models add viewing comfort and the option to attach a camera for projection or documentation. For senior secondary, college and research-oriented STEM labs, compound microscopes are essential.

Stereo microscopes

Stereo or dissecting microscopes work very differently. They provide lower magnification — usually 10x to 40x — but a three-dimensional, upright image of larger, solid specimens. This makes them perfect for dissection, examining insects, plants, rocks, circuit boards and any object too thick or opaque for a compound microscope. A well-rounded biology lab benefits from having both compound and stereo instruments, because they answer different teaching needs.

Optics determine everything. Look for achromatic objectives, which correct colour distortion and produce crisp, true-to-life images, and good-quality glass lenses rather than plastic. Magnification range

Match magnification to the curriculum. There is little value in paying for 1000x capability in a primary classroom that only studies large cells and fibres, just as a senior biology lab will quickly outgrow a student microscope capped at low power. Specify the range your syllabus actually demands, then ensure the objectives and eyepieces are interchangeable so the instrument can grow with your teaching.
